Carla's Challenge: Ernie's Birthday
January 28th is Ernie's birthday! "Ernie has been one of the stars of Sesame Street since its first episode in 1969."

I love Ernie's laugh :-) He's quite the character!

For this challenge, creat a layout using red, orange, blue and yellow. Be sure to include some STRIPED paper somwhere on your page.

I created a double layout for this -- you can do the same OR feel free to use either of the page sketches as a single layout.

Jules' Challenge: Peculiar People Day
January 10 is Peculiar People Day

Peculiar People Day is in honor of uniquely different people. Un-ordinary, extraordinary, unusual, strange, odd, uncommon, intriguing, different, abnormal, and quirky.... These are all things that we think of to describe the word "peculiar". Most of these characteristics can be viewed as good, or not so good. Today is a day to look for the good in your peculiar acquaintances.

(we won't tell my sweet Lydia that she shares this day as her bday...but she fits in a GOOD way!!!)

Your challenge if you accept it is to create a layout using a funny picture of someone! Anything that YOU see as funny....

Image

As you can see in this picture of my son....on top of him looking goofy he so should NOT have been riding a bike in flip flops and that helmet is NOT DOT safe! (he found a sticker to put on it that says it is but it ISN'T!!!)

Now here is the sketch for ya.....

GDT Chris' Challenge: Benjamin Franklin's Birthday
Did you know that Ben Franklins birthday is January 17th!

Quote:
Benjamin Franklin (January 17, 1706 [O.S. January 6, 1705[1]] – April 17, 1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. A noted polymath, Franklin was a leading author and printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and the glass 'armonica'. He formed both the first public lending library in America and the first fire department in Pennsylvania.
(from wikipedia) :D

In honor of his birthday I challenge you to create a card that uses at least 3 different fonts. (he was a printer after all!)

From the Gallery 1.18.11

This week's gallery pick comes from our very own Jules!  I love her mix of papers that keep the LO masculine, and her cluster of embellies that accent the theme of her page perfectly.  And how yummy does that sundae look?!

From the Gallery 1.11.11

Took a stroll through the gallery and found so many inspiring and fun layouts and projects.  This one by Heather (scrappin in AK) caught my eye.  First of all, how cute is that photo?!  I love the story this page tells and the happy mix of colors Heather used.

January Challenges

Looking for some inspiration to kick off your creativity this year?  Here's what the DT and GDT is challenging you with this month:

Carla's Challenge:
I got this big flower in one the December kit, and the rest is from January Petite kit. I challenge you this month to use a flower (or flowers) as a mat for a photo.

Image

Jules' Challenge:
This is a fun challenge...one we have done before but thought it would be a great time to do something like it again!
For this layout:

Image

I used a few things that really were meant for the trash! The 'sweetness - picture perfect' is ACTUALLY the name of the paper that I used! I saw it and thought instantly that would be a super title...well...it worked perfect! Also the little thing that I wrote their names on was cut out from the package that the larger embellishments came in! Just a mini picture of it!

So my challenge to you is to use something that you might consider 'trash' on your layout! (we are trying to save a few pennies from our Christmas shopping aren't we???)

Can't wait to see what you use! Look at how your embellishments come packaged (Prima is super for using their stuff!)....or even a tag off an article of clothing....ribbon from a package....I bet you have something!

Lee's Challenge:
Well I made this LO using the Jan. Petite Kit, so much fun to work with. I hope you were able to get a kit!

I love rub-ons and embossing, so for this months challenge, use at least 3 rub-ons on a LO and use one embossed embellie that you've embossed yourself. Have fun!!

Image

Michelle's Challenge:
Recently many of you were discussing fancy papers and how hard it is to sometimes take the plunge and slice into these beauties. So my challenge for you this month is to get out one (or more) of those special papers you've been holding onto and create a LO about YOU! After all, who is more deserving of a LO made with beautiful, fancy papers than you!

Image

For an added bonus, create your YOU page about a hope, dream, goal, resolution (whatever you want to call it) for 2011. If you include all 3 of these things: fancy paper, photo of you, and journaling about your goal(s) for 2011, I will put your name in for a little RAK from me.

GDT Chris' Challenge:
This month I challenge to create a layout according to this recipe.
You must include these basic "ingredients" but are free to add your own Flavorings to the recipe :D

1 photo
3 patterned papers
3 flowers
Ribbon
Bling

Here is the layout I made using this recipe
Image

I added white card stock and letter stickers for extra flavoring.
Hope you'll share your takes on these challenges with us over at the forum!

January's Guest Designer!

The calendar has turned the page, and it's time to thank our December Guest Designer, Dana.  Dana, you were a fabulous source of inspiration during our December event, and loads of fun on the boards with your trivia questions!  Thanks so much for helping us throughout the month.

And now for January's GDT.  We are so excited to have Chris Pozzi (ChrisP) designing with us this month.  Chris has been an active member since the day she joined our forum a short while ago.  She has already loaded up the gallery with her inspiring creations.  Check out this sketch she created for us today:

Here's a bit about Chris:
My name is Chris Pozzi and I live in north central Illinois, also known as corn country! I am married to my high school sweetheart; Jim and we have 3 beautiful, active children. Meagan is 16 and involved in band and the high school dance/kick squad. Sarah is 13 and loves video games, softball and music. Alex is 7 and is a bundle of energy while enjoying baseball and video games! My kids are the subjects of most of my scrapping. I work full time for a County Health Department as a Division Supervisor. My kids and job consume a lot of my time so I am mostly a weekend scrapper. I have been scrapping since the birth of my Alex in 2003 and consider scrapbooking my creative outlet. My kids often join me in our scrap room which is basically my husband workbench in the basement that I have invaded. Right now I am buried in photos of 3 active kids and I am trying to scrap my way out. That being said, I scrap whatever photos inspire me at the moment. I love using sketches and changing them to fit my needs and photos. I am so excited to be selected as Guest Designer for Scrapbook Heaven. I found this site about 6 weeks ago it feels like home! There are so many wonderful people here.

And we feel like you've been part of our family forever, Chris!  Looking forward to a great month together.

Envelope Mini Album Tutorial

I found this fabulous little mini-album at Follow the Paper Trail's channel on YouTube.

Here is a photo tutorial on how to create this pocket mini album from business sized envies.  I hope you give this a try, and if you do, please link up in the comments so we can come see it!

 One:
Just the standard business sized envelope will do.
I like the self-adhesive ones, so I don't get a paper cut on my tongue :)

Two:

 Three:
You want the envie open on both ends creating a tube (these will become the pockets).
DO NOT TRIM the third envie to 9" (see next step).

Four:
This ends up being 4 3/4".  Save the other half for the next page you assemble.

 Five:

Six:

Seven:

Eight:
note: Hold 1/2 envie so that opening is on right.  Apply adhesive to right side and top, bottom, and left leaving a 5/8" margin on the left.  This is where your album's binding will go.

Nine:
Make top and right hand side of each piece flush.  The tab for the binding should stick out on the left.
Ten:
Flip unit created in step 9 over.  Again don't put adhesive on the binding tab.  Glue longer envie (one with 1- 1/2" folded pocket) to this piece making bottom edges flush.

This is what you should have when you are done:
And here are the measurements for cutting the papers to cover the pages:

I cut a little notch out of the top back pocket to access that pocket.

And before I covered the pockets with pretty papers, I did a quick swipe with the paint brush on the edges (or you could ink them).

Here's another look at my finished album created with product from the January Elite Kit:
If you have any questions at all, I am happy to answer them.
