From the Gallery 10.26.10

Right about now, when the air here get more chilly than I want it to be, I get a little yearning for those days of summer.  Carla's beautiful page was just the right thing to warm me up!

I just love Carla's misting, the perfect balance of layered strips and stapled ribbon, the doodled frames and those book paper flowers.  Beautiful layout, Carla!

October's Guest Designer: Karen Ladd!

We are so thrilled to introduce Karen as our October Guest Designer.  Karen joined Scrapbook Heaven in March of 2009.  She is a constant source of happy chatting, and always has something kind to say to everyone.  Karen gets us thinking with her questions about creativity and process.  And of course we never tire of stories of her new granddaughter!  You can view some of Karen's work here.

And here's what Karen has to say about herself:

I live in the Northern California Bay area and have been crafting pretty much most of my adult life. Have dabbled in cross-stitch, quilting, sewing, fabric crafts, soap-making, needle-point and finally settled into stamping and scrapbooking about 10 years ago. I love paper-crafts of all types and have 25 years worth of photos that I've been slowly scrapping. My favorite subjects are my family and pets but am trying to start photographing nature and everyday life. My husband and I ran a business for 20 years but now I work part-time as a reader and grader for his psychology classes, which gives me a nice flexible schedule. Scrapping and stamping give me a wonderful creative outlet and allow me to express myself with color and design, something that I miss if I can't hole up in my craft room on a regular basis. My scrapping style tends to be simple and I use a lot of cardstock, but my goal is to learn to mix patterned papers and loosen up a bit. This forum has been my biggest inspiration in terms of learning to use texture and new techniques on my layouts but I am always in the process of finding a style that suits me.

We are thrilled to have you as part of the team this month, Karen!

From the Gallery 10.19.10

The gallery is hopping with oodles of inspiration from the Holiday Sketch Challenge crop that's going on.  It was so hard to pick one project for this week's gallery feature, but I love a good challenge, so here it is:

I just love the way Wanda showcased a time line of her daughter's photos to tell her story.  And that banner. Need I say any more?!

BTW, Wanda was inspired by one of the sketches from the Holiday Sketch Challenge crop going on now.  If you're inspired, too, hop on over to the forum and play along with us.  You could win a great prize!

Guest Designers: A New Approach

Scrapbook Heaven is making some changes that we think you are going to enjoy! As of Oct. 1st, we have asked members from the forum to be our Guest DT for the month. We have seen over the past year that many of our members are very active in the forum and we want to reward them for their participation and sharing of their creative talents. We want members to take ownership of your forum! We want to build our forum from within and give everyone a chance to learn more about being a DT and how a forum works behind the scenes. Call it on-site training. We feel this is an excellent opportunity for all and we hope this change will bring about the kind of forum everyone wants to a part of.

Here's how it will work:

- The Guest DT term will run for one month.
- Only "active" forum members will be chosen for positions.
- Duties include (but not limited to) - posting QOTD, SQOTD and LOTD, starting Random Thoughts.

- One crop LO/Card for that month's events.
- One LO/project completed with product from the Scrapbook Heaven store (purchased with a gift certificate as compensation for your duties as our guest DT.

Members will be chosen based on chat totals, gallery uploads, crop participation and overall board presence.

For your continued support you will receive a gift certificate from the store, be featured on our blog and in our newsletter, and be acknowledged on our Facebook pages.

If you aren't already an active member on our site, it's not to late to join in the fun.  Stop by the forum, introduce yourself, get chatting, and play along with our challenges.  You just may be the next Guest Designer!

Michelle's Challenges

One of our traditions every year is to give the boys holiday jammies on Christmas Eve. We take photos of them in front of the tree that night, and then again on Christmas morning at the top of the stairs before they come down to see what Santa brought.
Image

Image
One of my favorite ways to create pages right now is to go through my stash searching for embellishments in the color scheme I am using, and keep laying them onto my page until it looks done. For this challenge, I want you to embellish. Layer it on thick; the more embellies, the better!
Image

And here's a hint for adhering: once you get an arrangement that you like, keep everything in place and lift only one item at a time and stick it down. Curl back photos and larger papers and run a strip of adhesive. Use glue dots and adhesive squares to tack down items carefully without disturbing the rest of your layout. I can't wait to see what you create!

Happy New Year! I love the sound of those three words, the promise they bring and the chance at new beginnings. New Year's is filled with many traditions: the toasting of champagne, lists of resolutions, parties, confetti, hats and horns, and for us, New Year's always means Chinese Food! This LO is of my oldest experiencing his very first fortune cookie.

And the sketch to go with it:
Image
So many of the holidays we celebrate center around food. So my challenge to you is an easy one: use at least one photo of food on your LO.

Layouts due Oct. 22nd at 9:00 PM est, with a winner announced on our LIVE show on Oct. 24th. Please make sure your project is linked here! REMEMBER! You can get a second entry for the prize drawing by using the same theme that I used.

Lee's Challenges

If you're like me than you probably have a ton of photo's of your family playing outside in the winter. So I made sure to include lots of photo's in this sketch, so you can get them scrapped.

Here is my example:

Here is the sketch:

This sketch can be flipped or rotated, have fun with it.

Challenge: As you can see I used many different techniques on this LO. I did some needle piercing, glimmer misting, inking, overlay misting, I used rub-ons and I glued sparkles to the snowflakes and distressed the main photo. Your challenge will be to incorporate at least three of the above mentioned techniques into one LO.

Pretty soon we'll all be making a card or two for the holidays coming up, so we thought we'd give you a head start. Here is one sketch that can be used in many ways.

My example using product from the Oct. Elite Kit.

The Challenge - Your card must have two layers and some bling. Any holiday card you wish to make is fine. This is just an example.

Layouts due Oct. 22nd at 9:00 PM est, with a winner announced on our LIVE show on Oct. 24th. Please make sure your project is linked here! REMEMBER! You can get a second entry for the prize drawing by using the same theme that I used.

Karen's Challenges

I am really loving the change of seasons over from summer to fall lately so I went with a Thanksgiving card in warm autumn colors. I added fiber , rather than ribbon, because the wooly texture reminds me of sweaters! Here is my sketch. You can replace the flowers with anything...circles, chipboard shapes, leaves, etc. The challenge is to use either fiber, twine or raffia rather than ribbon. Let's see something more homey and rustic!

I have really been attracted to circles lately so my sketch includes several of them. In addition to the sketch, my challenge is to use at least 3 different patterns or colored cardstock in your layout, along with at least 6 eyelets, buttons, or brads!
Here is my sketch and my example:

Jules' Challenges

As I type this my hubby has the Military Channel on and is watching some show about WWII! About the bomb on Hiroshima....very interesting....anyway...it is in his blood! It is in our family's blood! We love those who served or who are currently serving!

Remembrance Day for our Canadian friends and Veterans Day for us in the US is all about that! HONORING those who served!

Here is the sketch I came up with:

Image

And the layout is one honoring Vince's father during his 'piping over' ceremony. (Retirement) He served 20 years on submarines!

Image

I decided to keep the pictures original...I thought of scanning and reprinting but I decided I wanted the full feel for this layout!

Now...a little challenge....I love black and white pictures....so my challenge will be simple for you...use at LEAST one black and white picture on your layout! IF you can't come up with a black and white picture THEN you can use a color one but you can ONLY USE black and white pp!!! Your choice...black and white picture, or black and white paper!

One of my favorite holidays of the year is Thanksgiving! A time to GIVE THANKS and a time to be with family....two of the best things we can do! Count our blessings and be with those blessings!

Here is the sketch I came up with:

Image

And here is the layout....a pic of my wonderful hubby several years ago cutting the bird!

Image

Now...for a little added challenge I think this being a holiday with lots of food that we should have a RECIPE challenge with it!

So...here is what you need to add:

At least 3 different pp's
Buttons
Chipboard
And some STRING! (no ribbon here...find some thinner string like you'd tie the bird up with!)

Have fun!

Layouts due Oct. 22nd at 9:00 PM est, with a winner announced on our LIVE show on Oct. 24th. Please make sure your project is linked here! REMEMBER! You can get a second entry for the prize drawing by using the same theme that I used.

Carla's Challenges

Christmas is my favorite holiday, but I rarely seem to scrap my Christmas photos! Not sure why, as there are so many awesome Christmas papers out there.

My sketch has room for 4 photos -- perfect for me with 4 kiddos :-) You could change it to 2 photos, if desired. Rotate the sketch, or flip it -- be inspired by it!

As an added challenge -- use some BLING on your layout.

Image

Image

I love the purples and oranges of Halloween themed papers, even though we don't celebrate Halloween. The only time any of our children dressed up for trick-or-treating was when my oldest was just a toddler.

Still, you can do some fun stuff with these themed papers.

Image

This sketch can be flipped, rotated, and you can also change one of the pics to an embellishment, as I did. Be inspired by it!

For the challenge, use at least two different ribbons and POP something off the page.
